Skincare Recommendations for Combination Skin

Hello! I have spent the past 4-6 months trying to find skincare products that help my combination skin. Combination skin is always that frustrating partnership of dry and oily skin, which means we often don’t get it quite right without trying things out and knowing your own skin well enough. After spending years using products that just weren’t right for my skin, it just made my existing skin issues worse. I struggled with acne in my late teens and early 20’s, so I had to change my skincare routine. Now, with some knowledge on how to keep the oiliness at bay and to still keep your skin moisturised, here are my picks for combination skin!

Disclaimer: Most of my recommended products here are from The Body Shop because I once just went in one day and replaced all my skincare with their stuff. And thank goodness I did. It is also nice to have a range just for combination/oily skin – the Seaweed range is so nice!

What I use daily for combination skin

Seaweed Cleansing Gel Wash – The Body Shop (for oily and combination skin)

(£8 for 125ml)

The Body Shop Seaweed Cleansing Gel Wash for combination and oily skin

I have been using this cleanser for the past year after being recommended it by a friend. It is so gentle yet so effective. I used to use creamy and foamy cleansers before and they just didn’t have the same clean feel after using it. And of course, with it being oil-free and soap-free, it helps keep oil and impurities at bay. Also, the cleanser is specifically designed for combination/oily skin, so you know you’re properly attending to your skin. It leaves a matte finish on my skin and perfectly does the job. I use it twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed, and you only need a little so it lasts a very long time. I last bought mine in late April and still have two thirds of it left.

Seaweed Oil Balancing Toner – The Body Shop (for oily and combination skin)

The Body Shop Seaweed Oil Balancing Toner for combination skin

After using the cleanser, I like to use the Seaweed toner to re-balance the skin. It’s alcohol free, making it gentle and refreshing. I also sometimes use it during the day when I’ve been out to get rid of the impurities that have gathered on my skin in between washes.

Vitamin E Cream – The Body Shop – for all skin types

(£13 for 50ml / £19 for 100ml)

The Body Shop Vitamin E Cream for all skin types

Usually as part of the Seaweed skincare range, you would then use the Seaweed Oil-Control Gel Cream. However, I bought this one for how it especially helps my skin after exfoliating my skin and after using invigorating face masks. It even works just fine day-to-day for my skin. Of course, if oily skin is more a concern for you, then I would suggest more of the Seaweed range, but this one works just fine to handle dry skin concerns too. Vitamin E is also great for skin as it’s a great antioxidant to keep your skin at its best.

What I use once or twice a week

Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask – The Body Shop

The Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask for combination skin

I use the Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask once a week and it’s so invigorating. It is infused with bamboo charcoal, green tea leaves and organic tea tree oil. This mask is also paraben-free, paraffin-free and silicone-free making it kind to skin. It helps my pores look smaller and helps to get all the gunk out that daily face washing just doesn’t reach. The clay mask also acts as a lovely and effective exfoliator, which adds a nice extra touch to when you have to wash it off.  It’s quite intense so I wouldn’t use it more than twice a week, but at least it does the job when you do use it! If you don’t want to use your hands, then check out the Facial Mask Brush from The Body Shop.

MUDMASKY Aftermask Vitamin Serum

(£43 – received as part of my GLOSSYBOX subscription)

MUDMASKY Aftermask Vitamin Serum

Now, don’t let the price tag scare you. I got this MUDMASKY Aftermask Vitamin Serum as part of my GLOSSYBOX UK subscription (£10 a month + delivery), which has given me the opportunity to try some high-end products that I can’t usually afford. They usually give you a discount on your first box or give a free gift with it (nice). The subscription also gives you the chance to earn GLOSSY Credit. Just by answering surveys about the products you receive and referring a friend during your membership, you can earn money to go towards buying products on lookfantastic. Getting £5-10 off something a month is so helpful. That way, you can get a decent chunk of a high-end product like this after a few months and not have to cry about spending 43 quid!

After using a face mask that really gets into your skin and has a good rummage around, you need to apply something to soothe it and give it the vitamins it may be lacking. This oil-free and fragrance-free serum is filled with the essential vitamins which can help that. It really helps my skin appear less red after a mask and just makes my skin feel really soft before bed.

Dr. Botanicals Pomegranate Superfood Regenerating Sleeping Mask

(£12 for 30ml / £19.90 for 50ml – received with GLOSSYBOX subscription)

Sleeping mask - overnight skincare

One night a week, I like to apply a overnight face mask, and conveniently, one that doesn’t mess up my pillow. This one (rich in antioxidants) is just like a cream and dries quickly with a thin layer of it on. It is not as cleansing as an exfoliating mask (which you still have to do another day in the week) but it is great for just giving your skin that overnight nourishment. It’s also a blessing that it’s all natural, so you can feel at ease with leaving it on all night. All you then have to do in the morning is wash it off and go through with your normal routine.

Other combination/oily skincare recommendations

Mimitika Face Sunscreen SPF 50

(£17.50 for 50ml – from my Birchbox subscription)

Mimitika Face Sunscreen SPF 50 skin

Bit of an admission here, I only recently clocked onto the importance of wearing sunscreen on your face. As I have a medium skin tone, I always thought I was fine with the sun. I also didn’t like the feel of putting normal sunscreen on my face, but boy is it important to put some SPF protection on your face. DO. IT. PLEASE. Once I stumbled upon the Mimitika Face Sunscreen (which is SPF50!!), I was so happy I could apply one that actually felt like my moisturizer. Even better, it has vitamin E in it too! I use this on every sunny day and I know it’s doing good. It leaves a soft touch to your face and doesn’t smell like sunscreen, so I cannot recommend this enough!

TIP: If you buy the full-size product from the Birchbox Shop (while you’re a subscriber) then you get a handy 10% discount – nice!
